50 Years of Art

Now in its 50th year, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition [TOAE] is a juried showcase featuring contemporary fine art and craft that takes place annually on Nathan Phillips Square, every July.  

As the largest juried outdoor art exhibition in Canada, TOAE offers a fresh-air alternative to conventional art shows and galleries. Hundreds of artists participate and an estimated 100,000 visitors attend the exhibition every year.  Side by side, established artists, undiscovered talents and innovative students sell their work directly to the public and make lasting connections with art dealers and collectors.  

In 2010, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition’s award program presented over $30,000 in cash awards and prizes to participating artists.  

The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition is a charitable, non-profit organization supported by a group of volunteers active in the art and corporate communities.  The exhibition is financed through registration fees, and by government, corporate and individual sponsors, enabling the TOAE to charge one of the lowest registration fees in North America.  No percentage of the artists’ sales is taken by the organizers.  

TOAE is recognized as a festival and event of distinction by the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario. 

Art Talks – Toronto City Hall in the Rotunda

All talks will be held at Toronto City Hall’s Rotunda and will be an hour in length with guest moderators. It is recommended to arrive 15 minutes early.

 TOAE has supported the connection of thousands of artists with the public and the public in touch with Canada’s artists. Artists Tara Cooper, printmaker, installation and film maker, Mark Stebbins, painter and Amy Switzer, sculptor and drawer will share their personal experiences on how being named a TOAE award winner has made an impact on their career.

 In 1965, Toronto was instantly rebranded and made modern through Viljo Revell’s design of the new City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. Forty-six years later, portions of this vision are being redesigned. Michael Awad, artist and former Professor of Architectural Design at the University of Toronto, Chris Pommer, Founding Partner of Plant Architect Inc. and Samantha Sannella, President and CEO of the Design Exchange will discuss the current design considerations necessary to keep ‘the image of a modern Toronto’ alive.

 The 21st century is becoming known as the Digital Age and as contemporary art practices advance as does the art. Alexandre Castonguay, artist and Professor at L’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) École des arts visual and mediatique, Shauna McCabe, Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada and Leah Sandals, professional art writer and editor will discuss the challenges faced when displaying contemporary art, the role of the audience and whether the notion that new movements or organization are being developed to showcase these works.

Join Betty Ann Jordan, arts journalist, trained artist and the principal of Art InSite, on a tour focusing on originality and innovation in works across all media where she will explain how she defines these qualities.

Sunday, July 10th | 3:30 – 4:30 PM

Join Emma Quin, artist and the Executive Director of the Ontario Crafts Council (OCC), who will lead a multidisciplinary tour of craft on the Square viewing emerging, mid-career and senior artists who make a significant contribution to Ontario’s craft community.

Art Now – Nathan Phillips Square

Art Now will take place at various site-specific locations throughout the entire weekend of the exhibition.

This new initiative by TOAE is to broaden its programming mandate by spotlighting the work of local artists such as Scott Eunson, Lubo Brezina, Kal Mansur, Tongue and Groove Collective and Brian Moore, working in the fields of installation, performance art and digital media

The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition is a charitable organization supported by volunteers active in arts and corporate communities. TOAE awards $30,000 in cash prizes to artists and students exhibiting on the Square every year.

Spence gallery is showcasing new acrylic paintings by Mora that continue his organic creations that conjure up “fantasy that resembles nature, dreams, imagination, mythology and history”.

“I began my studies of Mayan and Aztec iconographymany years ago, and my artwork strongly reflects these influences, both in terms of its subject and concerns and, to some degree,its outer form. For instance I depict elaborated figures that connect my work with myancestors…. I think it is necessary to return to key philosophical source materials, as well asorally transmitted ancient teachings.”

  Mora, whose works is sometimes described as abstract at other times surreal, received formal art training in Mexico and also at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Since migrating to Canada in1997, he has had six solo exhibits and several group shows in Toronto, the US, Europe and Mexico. Asa new Canadian artist Mora strives to merge his cultural background and Canadian experiences tocreate a new kind of art.
